I have the same impression as you do and it is the approach I’m taking. I hibernated everything above my WK level and now I am unlocking those cards as I progress through Wanikani. For example, this week I leveled up to level 21. So what I did was unlock all the cards with the L20 tag and then lock again all the cards that have the WK tag. For the time being I am excluding the Vocab taught in WK to avoid burnout.

@Neicudi: Is it possible to use boolean like operators in the Advanced search? For example: Show me all cards with the Tag L20 that do not have the tag WK.

I wasn’t the one building the deck and I believe these tags to be something recent. Based on some examples that I checked, I assume that those LXX are indeed indicating the WK level you’d be able to read a certain vocabulary term

No, not yet at least. I’d like to add regular expression searches at some point, which would do what you want and much more ^^

Hi, am I right in thinking that the vocab and sentence cards for this deck don’t have furigana when holding down like in the genki deck?

I’m using 10K alongside wanikani and don’t want to get burnout from extra kanji studies, but that also means that I can’t read some of my reviews… Would it feasible to add a similar furigana function to this deck’s reviews?

Yup, I just checked and that seems to be the case

I’m not the creator of the deck so I can’t help with your suggestion, but the cards are tagged by Wanikani levels (see screenshot below):

L1 = level 1
L2 = level 2
L3 = level 3
L60 = level 60
L61 = using kanji not taught on Wanikani

My suggestion would be to hibernate (see screenshot below how to) all cards in the deck, and every time you level up, you search for the tags with that level tag and awaken them I think that will solve your problem.

I’m hoping that furigana is possible to implement so that I can learn some words (without worrying about kanji) based on frequency rather than the order that wanikani teaches

I’m planning on releasing a Reverse Wanikani deck relatively soon, just wanna make sure the Wanikani team is okay with that. Hopefully that will help you reduce the load of having to use 3 SRS platforms

The vocab sentences would make a great community deck option companion in Kitsun but it’s their intellectual property of course. Ironically, the earlier sentences everyone struggled to read (and probably ignored) becomes actually readable by the end of the program.

Yuuup, it would. I do think they would be better off in a separate deck. I think they might be willing for it as long as it isn’t about SRSing meanings and readings. I know that Kaniwani does have the sentences as example sentences (which would be in the ENG -> JP deck as well).

And it’s tragic that they’re choosing to write words that people can’t read at that word’s level in hiragana over having something like a personalized furigana system. Once you learn the kanji, the example sentences lose their point. A level 60 won’t take much benefit from low level sentences.

KaniWani and/or KameSame style, not sure what to say. They are sort of competitive systems but still different.

Hmmm…it may depend if you are doing vocab only (just KW style is probably fine?) or were including kanji testing as well (which I know KS does but I think KW does not). But if you included kanji testing, there is Kanken practice element that others may look for. I recall a user requesting a drawing notepad while doing reviews in Kitsun. I know you can trick out KS by switching to a Chinese keyboard on iphone and you can draw kanji searches so curious what Kitsun could do here. Sorry, just thinking out loud…I know adding both takes alot of time so don’t want to request anything lightly or not useful to others.

I know that Kaniwani does have the sentences as example sentences (which would be in the ENG -> JP deck as well).

Tbh I’ve been using kaniwani with the Android JP drawing keyboard to practice writing kanji, it would be nice to have both kanji and kana input options (say, kanji for recall but kana for recognition?) Or the ability to use both.

I’d be really interested in sentences that are leveled by it’s maximum kanji level for additional reading/listening practice too

だいぶ
seems to have some issue in the sentence deck. There are two entries for this word, one is the kana only, and one is kanji 大分.

The kana only one is presented as kanji in the card front, and as well, doesn’t show the meaning on the card back.

Have you considered renaming the layouts to more user-friendly names? I feel like a lot of people struggle with understanding what each means.

You could rename them to:

Vocab Meaning
ENG -> JP
Vocab Listening
Vocab Reading
Sentence Listening Practice
Sentence Reading Practice

I added “Practice” to the Sentence Layouts because I feel that a lot of people also don’t know how to study those cards. By having “practice” there, it might help them realize that they’re evaluating their ability to read and listen correctly.

I think JP -> ENG and ENG -> JP would be very straightforward for beginners.
