[Discussion & Feedback] So Much Vocab! (Kitsun 10k Edition)

There are two entries that look the exact same way, the ひらく at the top is not visible until you answer it.

They’re both for testing the reading of 開く (hiraku) and 開く (aku), the subtitle doesn’t seem to appear in the layout.

It used to be differentiated by subtitle but the format was change and got rid of them. You can add a hint to differentiate with the “reading subtitle”

I didn’t notice before, thank you.
So I guess it’s okay to add as a suggestion?

Yeah just “propose changes” and go to “subtitle reading” and put whatever let’s you differentiate the correct answer.

I found another missing hint.
“Not house/ Not home” was on all the needed reviews, except this one.
So it’s a wild guess =P (I THINK it was いえ, but I’m not sure)

Finally finished N5 & N4 decks, time to jump onto this one.
I’m trying to makes sense of the tags.

The deck seems to be ordered mostly by frequency.

  • 1k->10k reflect that
  • L1 → L60 seems to be linked to WK levels
  • kana is self explanatory
  • Set01 → Set10
    • I can’t puzzle that one

The contents are based on 朝日新聞 frequency, but the order is a bit more complicated. At the “smallest” level, they are grouped by kanji. But then, those kanji are grouped by themes. And then, there are several “rounds” where it will come back to a kanji later for more rare/complicated words involving them. For example, there is a point relatively early on where 早い, 早速, and so on are learned (somewhere around 1000ish I think?). Then, in the mid 3000s, it comes back and you learn 早朝, 早まる, and 早める. And by searching, I see we come back to the kanji in the late 6000’s.

A few other things to note:

  • Sometimes words have multiple cards. Sometimes in the same round, sometimes in different rounds, going for their multiple meanings. Starting about 2000ish, I start suggesting more heavily to have more complete definitions for cards that only have a single card.

  • Interspersed semi-regularly into these are kana words, which mostly start with common words, and get rarer over time

  • Because it is roughly based on 朝日新聞 frequency, more formal words are represented more often than more casual words.

  • For 4 way card usage, currently I’m only up to the mid 3000’s right now, and after that it can be difficult/impossible to get some of the EN → JP and Audio → JP cards, but before then should be fine, though the earlier cards are going to be worse than the later ones where I suggested more frequently.

  • When answering, you don’t need to include anything in parens to get it correct (though you can if you want).

I’ve noticed when putting some items to front of lessons queue I don’t have Context Sentence appear in my reviews.
Is there something I should have selected when doing this to avoid this blunder?

Sentence cards are separate from the Vocab cards, so to have both you’d need to push both cards to the front
You can select the Sentence cards here -

I usually open two tabs for that if I have a lot of vocab to add, that helps with not having to wait for the deck to load :3

Looks like I have to go through my list of added words, glad I know now.
Thank you :joy:

Are the Vocab cards alone acting as the known words and not the Sentence cards?

Yeah, the Sentence cards would be acting as double then, so only Vocab ones are added to known words

Hi, I’m a new user. Just started with this deck. Got to 4 and 5, and it doesn’t understand numerical answers, neither for the numbers themselves nor for 4 things and 5 things. It requires typing four and five explicitly. It does understand numbers for 1-3, and I don’t see any difference in the way the cards are designed - no explicit “1”, “2” and “3” synonyms. Do you have any idea what’s wrong?

(Update: “6 things” works, “7 things” doesn’t.)

It is likely that these answers have not yet been added as acceptable answers or synonyms for the specific cards you are having the troubles with.

There’s two ways that you can change this:

  1. Add a personal synonym (website: click on the round pencil button on the backside on the card. app: in the actions dropdown choose to add a personal synonym)
  2. Suggest these answers through the “suggest changes” action in the dropdown. This way the deck author can accept your changes and update it for everyone else using the deck too.

Number one is the easy way to fix it for yourself right away, number two helps the community members who might have the same problem as you

Hope that helps a bit!

Oh, I see. I thought that this deck has been thoroughly debugged, seeing that this thread is so long  I sent several suggestions after my latest review, and I’ll keep sending them if I encounter more problems. Thanks a lot!

Hi, I have another question about this deck. Card #56 for shade (日陰) has the pronunciation hikage, but the audio sounds like hikaNE. Could somebody confirm if it’s so or not? I often mishear words even knowing how they’re supposed to sound, so I can’t be sure. I checked Google Translate, and there, the audio sounds very clearly as hikaGE.

It’s definitely hikage, but what you might hear sometimes with g is a nasal g sound. Here’s one of the explanations if you want a bit more info about it  pronunciation - The nasal allophones of /g/ - Japanese Language Stack Exchange

Thanks so much! I’m still hearing it as NE… :frowning: (And that’s why I’ll never speak any foreign language without an accent. Just don’t have an ear for it…)

In response to recent feedback on the 4 days accepting “8 days”

This is within the typo character limit.

You can turn this off in deck settings.

Hey! Thanks a lot for this great deck.

I have been using your Anki deck recently, and I have already studied a couple of thousand cards. I will switch to Kitsun, but I just want to know if the deck has any significant changes in the cards I have already studied.

I’ve been using this version of your deck:
https://community.wanikani.com/t/so-much-vocab/12050/290

It is sorted in 10k order, and tagged with WK levels. I have suspended all cards and unsuspended the ones up to WK 20 and Kana-only up to Core 4000.

Did you make a lot of changes in the meaning, descriptions etc.? Or did you only migrate it from Anki to Kitsun?

Thanks a lot!

@ctql

Hi!

I’m glad you’re enjoying the deck.

Originally it was a direct migration from Anki.

Since then there has been quite a bit of community feedback, so there are a number of changes to the deck in hopes to make it more streamlined and effective. However, I don’t think it will affect your learning progress to start where you left off on the Anki version. They are more tweaks of the content rather than complete reworks.
