[Discussion & Feedback] So Much Vocab! (Kitsun 10k Edition)

I’m a few hundred words through this deck and absolutely love it. Thank you!

I am curious though how people here are using it, do you have all of the cards turned on? Currently I’m only doing recognition, recall and sentence reading due to time constraints in my schedule. Long reviews with all the cards turned on just takes too much time.

So I’m curious how people in the community are doing their reviews

I feel like I’m doing something wrong here; I’m getting sentences instead of words, and often the picture hint tells you what the sentence is to begin with; I’m not actually learning any words.

Did you perhaps filter out the layouts with just the words? The deck is split into 50% vocabulary cards and 50% sentence cards.

If you go to the deck settings you can also filter out the sentence layouts (if all sentence layouts are filtered out, this means all sentence cards will get completely filtered out as well).

That’s what happened, thank you. For some reason I only was getting sentence cards but I just disabled the sentence layout and I started getting words again.

The pictures are very useful for the lessons. Unfortunately, they easily spoil during reviews. In those situations, I tend to look to the side so that I only get to hear the audio.

I have a suggestion for the 10k deck: can we find @hinekidori? :eyes:

Last night I got both the vocabulary すく and the vocabulary あく. The former meaning to become empty and the latter meaning to become vacant. But as far as I can tell, they both have identical writing, that being 空く. So when it asks me the reading or meaning for 空く, it’s entirely up to luck whether あくor すく is the right answer. Did I disable something that lets me tell which one is which?

Quick edit: I confused すく with さく.

I would say it’s a context thing. I could either add the alternative readings to the card or a subtitle to help point you in the right direction.

I think a subtitle would work, but its up to your discretion. Thank you very much.

What. The. Actual. ****. Mate, you’ve been missed. There have been a bunch of things related to this deck that we wanted to overwhelm you with :stuck_out_tongue: also, I haz questions about another deck of yours. You gonna come back on Discord too?

lol I’m already overwhelmed.

ppl can @ me in discord. I’m not actively ignoring anybody. Life has just been getting in the way lately.

Quick question as someone who just recently started this deck: Has anyone finished it? If so, have you noticed a significant improvement in your Japanese? In what way?

I really think this deck will be helpful but it’s so huge that it feels super overwhelming for me right now…

@FlamySerpent & @jprspereira might be the closest to finishing the deck

I’m officially done with 35% of it, but I have half of the deck as “known”, so it’s probably more than that. I’ve marked those as known on JLPT decks, adding leeches to 10k’s pushed lessons :eyes:

I honestly think 10k is a really good source for vocab for Japanese. I have gone through a couple thousand words before I started adding words from exposure, like manga or textbooks, to pushed lessons. I still do the same thing right now, and very rarely some common words are not on 10k, so I definitely recommend going through it.

I think having words in your own order after a while makes it a bit more suitable for each personal needs, like for example there are a bunch of words from 7~9k range that I add because I saw them in manga :eyes:

Also sentence cards are really good imo, they give you examples of how to actually use that word, maybe it’s a figurative meaning, maybe it’s a proverb, etc. I also learn much better if I hear the word being used in a sentence, so maybe it suits you too :kithappy:

I’ve started using this deck recently as I’m nearing the end of the Genki deck and books. I’ll start by saying THANK YOU! A great deck that I’m sure I’ll be using consistently for the rest of my time in Japan.

As I work through it, just wondering if it’s helpful to submit suggested changes when I come across inconsistencies… the main ones that come to mind are the use of ‘to …’ for verbs. It’s required for some but not others. A bit frustrating when you know the correct answer but aren’t sure what the correct input is. Just trying to be helpful but realize you’re all probably aware of these issues already.

@jprspereira and I send suggestions for 10k all the time! and @hinekidori is well aware of that :joy: So yes please! /o/ I usually just check jisho and goo dictionaries (the links that are already on the cards are super helpful for that) and add some meanings if I feel that they are needed :3 After the suggestions we’re all gonna enjoy this deck even more :kitlove:
