I tried using the pencil icon to add a synonym but for some reason it doesn’t save it.
Is there something i’m missing?

Definitely not too much, don’t worry 
The synonyms save per layout (so per sibling card), perhaps you added it to one layout and got tested on another one?
If that’s not it then it might be that something is off. Please let me know which deck and which card you added to the synonym to. I will double check it in the database 
By sibling card do you mean adding the synonym on the meaning card and then being tested on the reading card?

Exactly! Each layout creates a sibling card during review.
I just checked your data for that card, and it seems that it did create a synonym entry, but the actual value is empty (" ").
Is it possible that you didn’t press enter after typing it? It’s a “tag input” which allows you to type in it and then press enter or click on the dropdown entry to actually input it. After pressing enter you’d be able to add another synonym in the same way.
