I duplicated the “Japanese -> English - Dark” card to try to tweak the layout. While the Front and Back text areas became editable, I still can’t edit the Styling text area. Even in a brand new card layout, Styling is un-editable and is filled with the default styling for the template.

Heya!
That’s because styling is actually shared between layouts under their specific template. Simply put:
A template contains styling (CSS)
A layout contains structure (HTML)
This was done on purpose to prevent having to duplicate all your styling and changes with every layout.
The default layouts and templates can not be edited. What you can do however is duplicate the template, rather than just the layout. Once you duplicate the template you will also get a personal copy of all the layouts in it. Allowing complete control
